COLOR SHARK

Color shark is a beloved game among children in preschool, even in elementary school. It is a movement-based game that is suggested to be played outdoors in a larger space, with just a few minor preparations beforehand.

Preparation

Draw two lines a few meters apart from each other. If this is not possible, two trees or sticks can be used as markers. If played in a small area where children can imagine two parts of the play area, you can neglect the lines and let the children know that the shark can only move horizontally (represent the children what you mean by it!). The area between the designated lines will be the sea, with the lines representing the shore. Explain the rules and tasks to the children. Always ensure that everyone understands the rule of the game, and allow them to ask questions. The game does not require any equipment.

Game description

After the preparations, the shore has already been marked with the lines. The children line up behind one of the lines. The area between the two lines becomes the sea, inhabited by a shark. The first shark is chosen among the enthusiastic players.

When the shark calls out a color (e.g., blue), everyone wearing that color must walk to the other side (the opposite shore). Those that do not wear the announced color remain on the beginning shore, should start running to the opposite shore and the shark can catch any one of them. The color can appear on a smaller part of the clothing or in a pattern, making the player protected against the shark. The next shark is the one successfully caught.

The game ends when the children get tired or run out of colors.

Additional tips for the game leader:

Emphasize the importance of children being mindful of each other’s physical well-being. If a player remains the shark for a long time without catching anyone, consider a change. This can be beneficial both for the shark’s feelings (unless they enjoy being the shark) and for giving other children a chance to try this role.
